As the global energy transition enters the “Hydrogen Breakthrough Phase,” efficient and clean green hydrogen technologies are becoming a driving force for sustainable development. On November 10, CPU Hydrogen — an innovative player in China’s alkaline water electrolysis sector — announced a major milestone: it has officially signed the “Nepal Green Hydrogen Market Opportunity” project contract with Butwal Power Co Ltd. (BPC) of Nepal. The collaboration focuses on hydropower-based hydrogen production and hydrogen compression and refilling solutions, providing comprehensive services spanning solution design, equipment manufacturing, and on-site operation and maintenance.
- Benchmark Project: A National-Level Demonstration
BPC is a well-known developer and operator of hydropower plants in Nepal, with extensive influence and rich experience in clean energy infrastructure. As a core component of Nepal’s national hydrogen development program, this project is the country’s first officially launched green hydrogen demonstration initiative, carrying milestone significance for the hydrogen industry.
This partnership not only marks the first entry of Chinese hydrogen energy equipment into the Nepalese market, but also brings China’s mature green hydrogen technologies and solutions to the energy hub of South Asia. It injects new momentum into energy transition efforts across Belt and Road countries, becoming a landmark case of China–Nepal cooperation in the new energy sector and laying a solid foundation for CPU Hydrogen’s future international expansion.
- Competing Globally: CPU Hydrogen Wins the Bid
The project launched a global tender in June 2025, attracting participation from numerous hydrogen technology suppliers and engineering contractors worldwide due to its national-level demonstration significance. After multiple rounds of rigorous technical evaluation, CPU Hydrogen stood out with its deep technical expertise in alkaline water electrolysis, end-to-end service experience, and localized customized solutions — successfully securing a key “entry ticket” for Chinese hydrogen equipment into the Nepalese market.
- Empowering Transformation: A New Chapter in China–Nepal Cooperation
Once completed, the project will achieve zero-carbon hydrogen production powered by clean hydropower, along with high-pressure hydrogen storage and transportation capabilities. Its annual hydrogen output is expected to meet the needs of regional demonstration applications, serving as a guiding model for Nepal’s hydrogen industry chain development. At the same time, it will strengthen China–Nepal collaboration in the renewable energy sector, opening broad prospects for cooperation in green transition, renewable utilization, and sustainable development.
- Deepening Innovation: Supporting Global Energy Transition
Looking ahead, as the project progresses, CPU Hydrogen will continue to enhance its R&D in alkaline water electrolysis technologies, developing tailored solutions optimized for Southeast Asia’s solar resources and South Asia’s hydropower potential. Meanwhile, the company will deepen partnerships with energy enterprises along the Belt and Road, building a comprehensive service system covering design, technology export, and long-term operations — enabling China’s green hydrogen technologies and equipment to better serve the global energy transition.
